The big secret is that there is no secret. It’s as simple as …

Morning of Ryan Carson

  • Early bird
He is an early riser, so I wake up at 4:30am
  • Ready for workout
    He has a perfect workout schedule : workout (5:45am — 6:30am).
  • Takes his coffee and protein shake
After workout he brew a quick coffee and mix a protein shake
  • Formulation
He manages his notebook and write down what he need to do that day.
  • Breakfast and time for family
He’ll spend the mornings with his family, having breakfast and getting the kids ready for the day, before starting his work at 9am.
  • Transfer things
He expand the Gantt Chart so he can see every line and he scan down the current day and see what he need to be doing. He transfer those things from screen into a simple bulleted list in his journal for the day.

The key is that he does this before checking email. He doesn’t want anyone else’s whirlwind to consume his focus on what he already decided was important for this year, week, and day.

Staying healthy physically and mentally – Now that I’ve gotten healthy, I’m much happier, so I want to continue to make this a priority.

Afternoon of Ryan Carson

  • Work from home
He’ll either head into the Treehouse offices in Portland, or work from home.
  • Working 4 days a week
Ryan Carson, founder and CEO of the programming-education company Treehouse, created a 32-hour, four-day workweek for his employees. But now he’s switched back to a typical five-day workweek. “It created this lack of work ethic in me that was fundamentally detrimental,” he explained.
Monday to Thursday — is divided into four main areas of the Treehouse business:
  • Mondays — product
  • Tuesdays — video & teaching
  • Wednesdays — HR, culture & finance
  • Thursdays – Marketing & Sales.

Ryan prefers written communication way
He avoid facetime meetings and phone calls whenever possible. Keeping communication in written form means that people can respond when it’s convenient for them.

When I really need to get work done, I put my headphones on and ignore everybody.
-Ryan Carson

Thinking of Ryan Carson

  • Decide on the 2–3 big buckets (goal) in your life
  • Choose what you’d like to accomplish in each bucket over the next 12 months
  • Drill down on each goal until it turns into a daily action
  • Do the actions
  • Repeat for 365 days

What’s his best time-saving shortcut/life hack?

he reduced his daily email load from 100+ down to 10 with one simple thing: Convoy. It’s an internal app we built that’s a lot like Reddit. they don’t have managers at Treehouse so all communication has to be searchable and public. Now instead of people copying you on a ton of emails (whether you actually need to be involved or not) you can simply go to Convoy and pull your information instead of having it forcibly pushed on you through email. It’s astonishing how much more productive he is now.

Evening of Ryan Carson

  • Wrapping up from office
At around 6pm, Carson wrap up his work

Dedicate the rest of the evening to quality family time
  • Way to dreams
Heading off to sleep between 9.30-10.30pm to get his ideal seven hours of sleep.
  • Friday to sunday
“It’s just time to spend time with the family and friends and do house maintenance. I try hard not to carry my iPhone around so I don’t get sucked in to work.” he mentioned in a blog

If you are willing to do a little bit of work and look a little bit dumb, there is nothing you can not achieve.
